Inteligent crane load effects control

This special project came out of regular supply of overhead cranes after our customer asked us to find solution how to decrease crane load effects to the building. After in situ geological survey complicated foundation conditions were discovered so the estimated price for building foundation was out of their budget.

We applied an intelligent load effect control for all four cranes which at the end considerable reduced load affected the building. For example, vertical load on middle line columns (common columns for both heavy cranes) decreased from almost 8 000 kN to less than 2 000 kN, which greatly reduced requirements for upper and bottom construction of the building.

  • each crane record actual load on both of its crabs
  • each crane measure actual position of both of its crabs from middle (outer) line columns
  • each crane measure its actual position from others cranes
  • each crane communicates with other cranes (wifi, two independent canals)
  • each crane is equipped by two PLC (master and reserve)
  • no action (if load or distance does not approach the adjusted value)
  • switch certain drive to minimum speed towards increasing the load
  • all speeds to minimum (maximal adjusted value is about to be reached)
  • all stop (maximal adjusted value of the load was reached)
  • 180t crane loaded at its maximal capacity can operate ca ± 1m from exact middle of the crane span (if crane trespass this condition, its capacity is linearly reduced according its distance from the runway)
  • 175t crane can drive around fully loaded 180t crane but both of its crabs must be unloaded and in most distant possible positon from middle line of columns.
  • 90t and 85t crane must not affect this column
  •  two hoist on each crane (f.e.125t + 55t)
  • two crabs travelling on each crane
  • two cranes on common runway (180t+90t, 175t+85t)
  • Stahlcranes
  • Schneider electric group (since 2004)
  • Výstavba vodných elektrární s.r.o. (Hydro plant Construction Company) Dubnica nad Váhom, Slovakia, www.vve.sk (180t, 90t)
  • ZTS Výskum a vývoj a.s. (heavy engineering plants – research and development) Dubnica nad Váhom, Slovakia (175t, 85t)

Each crane controls load effects to the building independently, but it is using data measured by others crane. Every crane shares its data with other cranes even if it is switched off.

Two heaviest cranes (180t, 175t) restrict their capacity not only according to their distance to other cranes, but also according to its own load and positon of that load. They have the capacity of overloading the runway by themselves alone unlike smallest cranes which fully-loaded, single-standing cannot overload the runway.
